It takes a few years to get well established. Usually found in wet habitats, such as Cypress-Tupelo swamps. And even ditches. But it thrives in cultivation. My plants came from a spring fed boggy area in Central Louisiana, growing with sensitive fern (Onoclea sensibilis). The habitat is Beech-Magnolia forest, and there were a few ancient Magnolias that are probably some of the largest remaining on the planet. I've seen the one on Weeks Island, and I've heard of Magnolias in Mississippi that may prove to be larger. The only way to get a good shot of Basswood blooms is from underneath. The color is so subtle, and when the tree is viewed from a distance, it's amazing. My dog Buck Buck, a tempermental but loyal chihuhua, is now part of this Basswood. We buried him there when I planted it. For those of you anarchist types, my wife will be a little bit of this tree, too. She'll also be part of the Live Oak in the front corner. And the plantings at Tabula Rasa. And the Camphor Tree. And the Crepe Myrtles. State and Federal Laws do not apply to me. I claimed the Island Oasis an independent and autonomous nation years ago. I will formally declare Tabula Rasa an autonomous nation tomorrow. And it's alive...
Onoclea sensibilis is fantastic :-D we have many trees [Tilia] on the island where I live, dried flowers and make them tea :-D The third is Amorphophallus???
Onoclea sensibilis It's the fertile frond that I find fascinating. I'll be back up to this habitat soon to collect more of this beautiful fern. The owner of The Fountainhead garden owns this property. It's over 100 acres along Spring Creek. There are also native azaleas, silverbell, and Lobelia cardinalis. When visiting sites like this, I have to wonder just what the forests were like before the chain saw came along. You got basswood? Mine is Tilia caroliniana. I'm not sure what species ya'll got, but I've heard that Linden trees are common in Europe. It's a man-eating Amorphophallus.
I have loved Lizard's Tail ever since I found a wild patch a couple years ago. I think they look really cool.
