For years I have been trying to identify a moss, not a lichen, I saw on a botany field trip in Acadia National Park, Maine in 1982 with the common name of match stick moss. The botanist mentioned it in passing and as we were looking for another plant, he never gave the Latin name. The capsule at the top of the sporophyte is bright red. Please do not confuse this plant with 'Red Soldier' or 'British Soldier Lichen,' a common name for Cladonia cristatella. While I know exactly where the moss colony is located I do not relish a 500 mile trip to obtain a picture. Sorry folks no picture. :-(

Jerry I think Kildale may have a photograph of the Match Stick Moss. PM him and I'm sure he'll be glad to help you out.
