I am getting itchy fingers, and that was made worse today when I visited our local 'chain' garden centre. They have their seed potatoes in, and I bought a bag each of International Kidney, Maris Piper and Kestrel. Those perform the best on my allotment and are firm faves with the family, so I am not going to bother experimenting with other varieties this year. Tomorrow I am going to buy a few sacks of seed compost so I can start sowing tomatoes and chillis over the next week. YAY!

You rascal, you!---you're ahead of me again.
Well, I have ordered my spuds, but there is no sound from my spud dude as to when I will receive them.
I ordered International Kidneys again this year, but I do not know if I will get them. I have ordered them tha past two years and the spud dude did not send them. :( ....so I am VEWWY jelous that you can just waltz into a garden center and buy them, just like that! yes...VEWWWY jelous. :D

It is good that you will be able to start your toms too--also earlier than I will.

I'm all excited now, hearing your news. Way'duh go!

Sjoerd, you are not alone in envy. I asked my supplier and he said about Good Friday. I plan to do both Pontiac Red and Yukon Gold. Two long rows will be sufficient as we lack storage space. Last year, the potatoes began to soften after a few weeks, so we cooked them, mashed them and froze them. Believe me, they are delicious.
I wish you both a hearty garden.

Snap EJ. :-D We've just bought two bags of seed potatoes - one early (Epicure) and one mid season (Red Rooster.) I know it's still a bit early for us up here but we just couldn't resist any longer.

I'm growing out some of Tom wagners TPS (true potato seed) this year.

I have always started from clonal divisions (cut up potato).

They're germinated, I expect to plant out like May.

I'll let ya know how they come out.

And in Texas our potatoes have been in the ground for a month and have been fertilized and hilled twice. Ahem . . . .

    Potatoes

Coppice, I once tried growing potatoes from the seed, but mine didn't grow. Hints?

    Re: Potatoes

According to Tom Wagner they are handled much as tomato seedlings, ie grown under cover and trasplanted to feild as soil warms.
