Seedling plant infestation in my wildflower & other gard

This is the first year I've encountered this.

I live in northern Wisconsin (St. Germain). There is an infestation of some sort of seedling in my gardens. it has a heart shaped leaf and propeller-looking leaves underneath. They have a small, thin long root that pulls out easily from the mulched areas (which is where I've started). There are hundreds of these and it will take forever to try to pull them individually. However they are also widespread in my wildflower garden so I can't use weed killer.
Does anyone have any thoughts on what these are and how to get rid of them? [/img]

Kind of looks familiar but I'm not certain :-| Is there a tree nearby that sent out seeds?? I bought myself a "stirrup hoe" for my birthday last year to take care of that very same problem! I planted morning glories, once, years ago, and now they pop up EVERYWHERE!! With this hoe I just scrape them off the soil and then move on to the next one :-o very handy!! I wouldn't let them take hold, I think it's easier to tackle them when they are little and weak ;)

There are birch and maple around. Maples are closer but it doesn't look like a maple leaf. There are no seedlings in the garden area where the birch are.

Is there any chance you could take a clearer photograph for us please? It would really help us to help you if you can.

Those "propeller like leaves" are cotyledons, which are the primary leaves, but not true leaves. The heart-shaped leaves are true leaves.
The long thin root sounds like a tap root for a tree. Are there any catalpas in your area?
Getting rid of them without harming your wildflowers is difficult. If you have a spray bottle with a straight spray, not mist, and a LOT of patience, you can fill the bottle with vinegar and individually spray the unwanted seedlings. Vinegar is an herbicide, so you have to be careful not to get it on your wildflowers.

You need to add it to the forum, though. It is still a maple, though.

Yup, Maple Trees. Easy to weed out of gardens. They do not take hold in lawns where they are regularly cut.

Yes Maple, we have them all over Northern NY (Carthage) this year was the first I had seen them too and many people having fits about them in their grass. I have had to pull them from beds but it is true that they won't live in a mowed yard. I was told that this happened because of the long cold winter. I have no idea.
