So I read that the flowers of grapefruit mint are sterile but it sows freely. How is that so? Also, how can I make more plants out of the one I have?

I think I know where you read that and it is a bit confusing. Since the different fragrances of mint are hybrids, their seeds are usually either sterile or they will not be true from the seeds.
The seeds Grapefruit mint produces are probably not worth saving since those are you two options. Hybrids tend to revert to one of their 'parent' plants so if the seeds from a hybrid does germinate they will not reproduce the plant they came from.

With hybrids it is usually best to root cuttings or divide the original plant.
