This has appeared in my garden a few times over the years and this year i have let it grow. It is about 1m tall with 5 stems coming off one central one. leaves are long and thin, developing flower buds are pointed and the flowers are purple with yellow centre and the petals have blunt edges.
The flowers open in the morning, but are often shut by afternoon.
    Any clues much appreciated

Palustris! Many thanks, after looking at a few more images, I do believe you are right.
Really pleased to give it a name - and may attempt to harvest later in the year.
    Great work! x

To get a decent meal from the roots you need a large number of plants. they are rather thing things.
