seperating podocarpus trees to use for espalier

    I ordered two podocarpus macrophyllus "maki" plants and they came with 7 or 8 trees in each pot. Do I need to seperate the trees apart in order to use them for espalier plants or leave them as they are? And are there any tips for how to sort them apart without irreparably injuring them? Thanks for any help.
