The posting before this I showed the progress in the veggie gardens. It is still early days, but I am beginning to harvest enough to eat fresh and freeze-in. I ended that posting with this foto of harvest Chioggia beetroots. Other things are comming is as well. Left front are summer sprouting broccoli. To the right of that is one sort of pea. In the small trug to the right are a second sort of pea and a green courgette. Behind everything is the large trug full of broadbeans. I have never had so many as this year. Once home, I stalled out the runner beans and peas. I have the green peas, the dark purply-red Kapucijners peas and the first two Ferline toms....It´s BLT time! I had so many peas, I had to shell them in stages. Here is what I got at the first pause. There are more and more of these little orangy toms. As I mentioned, I have begun removing my spuds. I mixed them in a wicker basket at the garden. Here they are in a burlap bag at home, along with a couple of lettuces. Here are some lovely specimens, all cleaned and presentable. The upper row of yellowish potatos are the `Linzer Delicatess`. The reddish ones are called `Koopmans Blauwe`. These appear reddish to me, but when first harvested, the eyes have an iridessent blueish colour to them. The Linzers are very tasty and so are the Koopmans Blauwe´s. The Linzers are sort of stiff and waxy, the Koopmans Blauwe are a bit more crumbly, but that flavour.....mmm-mmm-mmm-mmm-MMMMM! It is a very special flavour. Well, after all this rain, I am waiting for the sun to return...and when it does things will start producing like mad, I expect.
Your hard work is now paying off.Everything really looks so good.I love the little sweet peas.I like to fix them with new potatoes.I also like the green beans and potatoes cooked together. My friend Earlene came to visit yesterday. She brought a huge bowl of figs,a bag of peaches, ripe tomatoes, and sweet banana peppers they are so yummy.
Nice harvest Sjoerd, you making me hungry. We had some beautiful tomatoes this year and enjoy many BLT's. They are almost finished up bc of our heat, but I will put some fall tomatoes in soon.
Okay, supper at Sjoerd's tonight and tomorrow and we will eat hardy. Everything looks delicious and beautiful. How are the donations to the local food bank going this year?
Isn't it just the most exciting time Sjoerd?!?!? I love it. Your spuds look great, those white/yellow ones look very buttery. Yum. You have plenty of peas there also. I have a large bag full in my freezer and sowed another row last week and will sow another row next week to try and get another couple of crops before the end of the season. I picked another handful of cherry toms, but no biggies yet like you, but yours are in the greenhouse aren't they? Mine are in the open, so always later. Still blight free though....for now! You always have great success with beets. Mine are usually a little hit or miss, but this year they are romping away. They don't seem to mind drought. Those, radish and turnips seem to germinate easily in this heat. It all looks fab as usual Sjoerd and makes my mouth water. So, whats for supper?? We are on cold chicken, new international kidney spuds, purple queen french beans and peas.
Your garden & vegetables look great. Mine didn't do well but the lady we rent from told me to go pick stuff out of their garden this morning. They have a big garden and they spend a lot of time in it. dooley
Thanks for liking the posting, GLENDA--I enjoy eating the veg several different ways too. What a pal that Earlene is to bring you such goodies! You are going to be eating good stuff for a couple of weeks, by the sound of it. Thanks, CaBe--I hope that you can get more in the ground in time for a second harvest. We only get one shot at toms here because the season is so short, you lucky thang, you! TONI--I was all set to have you lot over for supper, but had to work late tonight. Tch! Sorry. The donations for the food bank have not begun yet. Folks are not harvesting enough yet. I expect another week or two. Oh yes, EJ-- absolutely the most exciting time of the season--harvests and blooming flowers. Terrific. Thanks for the spud compliment. The Linzers are indeed extremely tasty...sort of creamy in a way. I have never had so many peas as this year. I have been weighing planting some more peas too--where the potatos are at the moment. Yes, you are right my toms are always in the greenhouse. I am having such a good luck with the beets again. I don't know why I always have such good luck, but I'm not going to question it. hahaha. They did well during the draught too--did you see the length of the roots? I'll bet that I could have entered those in a contest somewhere if there had been one over here. I had a veggie stir-fry and salad with home made strawberry-blueberry popsicles for dessert. I cannot tell you how jealous I am of your International kidneys , because I cannot find anyone that sells them over here anymore. Darn it! Your supper sounds...delish. Thank you, DOOLEY-- I am sorry to hear about your bad garden luck...but how nice the landlady offered some veg to you. Very neighbourly.
Thanks Netty--I really enjoy eating fresh veg and fruit. It isd just beginning to trickle in now. I expect the big harvests to be in august.
A really good start to your harvesting Sjoerd. It never ceases to amaze me just how much you manage to grow on your lotties. Just goes to show what hard work and Mother Nature can do!! :-D
Everything looks delicious. All you hard work is paying off. I know you get great pleasure from the "fruits" of your labor.
Wow, everything sure looks delish, delish, delish! What a fun time. I'll bet you just glow with excitement. I sure would.
I am sometimes amazed too EILEEN--hahaha...but like you said there is a price--hard work. I'm not sure that I perceive it as work though. I get too much pleasure from it. Chuckle--Nice pun, GAIL--Glad you like the looks of the harvests. My sentiments exactly....I sure do glow, and the neighbours are complaining at night.
