I was reading this yesterday, (see link below), and it just made me realize that this indeed could be another early sign of climate change... Already this year in June we in the city of Karachi experienced such an unexpected heatwave, that it left 1500 to 2000 people died due to heatstroke. Yet now I get to read of this unexplained anomaly too... Megabats take over fruit trees: http://tribune.com.pk/story/955775/uninvited-guests-megabats-take-over-fruit-trees-in-rural-sindh/ Anyway, I was wondering if anyone of you also have noticed a dramatic shift and/or somewhat unexplained anomaly in your areas of the world. Be it animal related or otherwise, doesn't really matter - But have you guys noticed anything out of the ordinary this year? Few years ago we all heard of the spontaneous colony collapse of bees in North America, at first everyone thought that it too must be an early sign of climate change. However it later turned out that some new type of a pesticide was causing it. But I have no explanation for megabats taking over the fruit orchards in Pakistan's southern province of Sindh... That are has been producing fruit for well over a 100 years. And never in recorded history was a megabat ever sighted there. yet now they seem to be everywhere...
Good size fruit bat isn`t it ? Nothing out of the ordinary here. Has there been drought,,excessive logging,,or things that have happened in other areas that would have made them migrate to your area ? May not be such a bad thing. Trading fruit for meat,, they are eaten in some parts of the world.
Yikes! That is one big bat. So glad our bats are only the size of a mouse. Like Mart said. I have not noticed to much change in our weather. Pretty normal.
That is a huge bat and not one I'd like to encounter! Our weather this year has been different. June was our only hot month but we had a much wetter July and August with cooler temperatures.
No that isn't going to happen here, as Pakistan is an Islamic country. So all food items (specially when it comes to meat) have to be Halal - Same as Israel, where meat has to be Kosher. Which is also why you won't ever find any pig farms in Pakistan, and neither in Israel - And since bats are actually flying rodents, there is absolutely no chance of anyone even thinking of consuming them... In neighboring India however it's a totally different story, as I have found a clip on YouTube (too graphic to share the link here, but you can search for it yourself), where poverty stricken people are shown consuming farm rats, (section taken from a BBC report). So if given the opportunity I think anyone in that kind of a situation may consider eating bats - But here in Pakistan, that just isn't going to happen...
