I found this plant in a side walk today. I love it and want to know what it could be. Any idea? ( photo / image / picture from Tina's Garden ) ( photo / image / picture from Tina's Garden ) ( photo / image / picture from Tina's Garden )
Chaenomeles japonica comes in a few colours from white to deep red. The fruit also varies from bright yellow to green when ripe too. We have about 6 different ones in various parts of the garden.
I made quince jelly a few years ago...I couldn't give it away. It is a very ....different...odd, acquired taste. The shrub is beautiful, but the jelly? I won't make it again unless someone asks me for it.
Speaking of Quince, remember a while back I spotted one at my aunt's house and took a couple of cuttings. To my surprise... one of them took!!! woohooo!
Quince fruit (the true quince) was what Marmalade was originally made from. The Victorians changed it to Oranges because they were easier to get in quantity and to process.
Yea, Cheryl. Leave the other one in the pot, it just might be a slow learner. I did not know that Palustris, thanks. I like Quince jam much better than anything with orange....except Mimosas.
Cherylad - I did the same yesterday. Just broke 3 small branches and stuck to the ground. Will see what happens ... nothing to lose, right? ;-)
