The first of the week, we had a smoke smell in the air. Since the wind was out of the west and there are no fires around here, it could only be from the wildfires out west. It lasted until the wind shifted to the northwest and then it was gone. So the smoke was traveling a couple of thousand miles?

Well, if I knew how to read the fire map I might be able to say which fire your smoke is coming from. In the northern Rockies there is a warning on the map but I don't know where the correct satellite map is to confirm the smoke direction or distance. That is an awful long way for smoke to travel. Bummer to smell smoke from that distance.

Captain, in the past we have had smoke smell from Arizona wildfires, and we have had dust deposits from West Texas winds. Airborne particulates can be carried for amazingly long distances.
If you have any breathing difficulties, please stay inside, or wear a mask when outside, and take care of yourself because you are very valuable to the Stew!

No breathing problems. It's just a faint smell when the wind is out of the right direction. Almost like when you snuff out a candle and you can smell the smoke. The weather channel had a map on the other day and showed the smoke from the Idaho fire was reaching Ill. And that's when I realized where it had to be coming from.

Nothing like this to remind us that our planet is, indeed, finite.

We are getting the smokey smell here too. It isnt strong enough to cause breathing problems--yet.

However, when I smell smoke, I am always on the lookout for where it is coming from. We live on the edge of National Forest lands, and I am always concerned about wildfires. We have had problems in previous years with arsonists setting multiple wildfires at one time and more than there were firemen to handle. One time, my boys and I and my mother helped to put one out that was close to the home of some friends because there were not enough firemen to come to their aid. Last summer, there was a LOT of smoke coming through our woods, so I called to check on it, and the forest service was doing a controlled burn nearby on a logging road. And once, we did have a wildfire in the forest very close by my place, so it is good to make sure where the smoke and fire is located!

If I must do any burning of my own, I make sure the weather is SAFE for burning before I light it, and to keep my garden hose turned on and in close reach just in case. We have had a few close calls of our own; and I had to get treated for smoke inhalation once. It is no fun.
