I woke up to snow this morning! I'm sure there's lots of people in the Northeast and Midwest that have. It was so disheartening. I had a lilac that was starting to bloom. Now its down on the ground because of the weight of the snow. I also had planted out some lily plants and garden peas (seeds)a week or two ago. I swear when I did they were not predicting any bad / cold weather for some time to come. I'm sure the lilies are on the ground and the pea seeds are just sitting there. We're suppose to get snow the next two days. Where was this in February? Anyway, here's a little spot where you can vent about the weather.
My sympathies--I remember a Mother's Day blizzard when we lived in upstate NY. That is one of the reasons we are now in Texas! Your peas will be fine--they like cold. Your lilac will snap back, but don't try to help it by shaking off the snow. It's better to let Mother Nature take care of it slowly. The only good thing out of this is that snow is high in nitrogen, supposedly.
I am so sorry :'( I don't know if it is in our forecast but I wouldn't be surprised to see it hit us. :-x We have had 3 or 4 BEAUTIFUL days but I know this is just a teaser. What is your zone? I think I'm 6a and I think that little "a" means always guessing
If it's any consolation we're still having snow and hail here in Scotland too. I've had to move all my tender plants back into the greenhouse because of the frost at nights. Spring??? Well maybe next month.
I'm in zone 5. This was the earliest I had ever planted out anything. I should have waited. Eileen, Sorry that you're still getting hit with snow. I have all of the plants I hadn't planted out yet( which is the vast majority) sitting in my "sewing" room and dining room. The "sewing" room looks like a jungle. I haven't done any sewing in a few years. Thus, the quotes. It's more of a catch all (junk) room. moderator's note: removed double posting see point 3.6 of usage rules
Here in Northern Ohio it is WINDY!!!! sunshine this afternoon (which I am surprised to see) BUT WINDY!!!!and close to 50f, cold again tonight...The strawberry flowers are starting to open and we have lost quite a few already due to the sporadic cold nights. We didn't realize the one patch had started blooming already. oops!
We are having the same kind of weather here in southern Ontario. Snow in the forecast for today and tomorrow and WIND, gusty winds. So far, it has only been rain with the odd snow flake. I almost planted out a few things - the nice weather we were having gave a false sense that winter weather was really over. I'm glad I listened to that little voice in the back of my mind! May 24th is our frost date here and I think I'm going to stick to it, no matter how tempted I get!
no frost or freeze I would be a very unhappy gardener if I ever woke up to snow. We didn't even have a frost this year. Then again, we don't Finger Lakes either.
