Wow, what a difference a day makes! After a blizzard that lasted more than 24 hours and dumped more than 2 feet of snow on Friday and Saturday, Sunday was a beautiful, sunny day! The perfect day to finish digging out and take a walk around the neighborhood. The view from the porch today looked so much more promising! ( photo / image / picture from daisybeans's Garden ) My goodness, it felt soooo good when I finally dug my way out of my own yard and could survey the conditions in the road... OK, not too bad! ( photo / image / picture from daisybeans's Garden ) Ha! No mail for me anytime soon.... ( photo / image / picture from daisybeans's Garden ) After finishing the digging out of our cars and driveways, my neighbor Jeff and I decided to take a walk around the neighborhood to see how things looked... Lots of snowy scenes... ( photo / image / picture from daisybeans's Garden ) ( photo / image / picture from daisybeans's Garden ) ( photo / image / picture from daisybeans's Garden ) ( photo / image / picture from daisybeans's Garden ) This made me laugh.... looks like Marge Simpson and friend! ( photo / image / picture from daisybeans's Garden ) We decided to walk down to the water.... It isn't very far in any direction. My neighborhood is a peninsula bordered by the river at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, and two creeks, one on either side. Walking, one can access one of those bodies of water at the end of any street. Literally, every street in every direction ends at the water. This is heading down to the river at its mouth where it meets the Bay. ( photo / image / picture from daisybeans's Garden ) Looking up river, you see the Key Bridge. Besides this bridge over the river, there are two tunnels that go under the river to Baltimore. I use one of the tunnels when I go to work each day. That is the Port of Baltimore in the distance beyond the bridge. ( photo / image / picture from daisybeans's Garden ) We walked in the other direction toward one of the creeks... The river is a fast flowing river especially here where it first meets the Bay, so of course, it is not frozen.... But as we approached the creek, we could see that it has ice on the surface. Not hard enough for skating!! Even if it did freeze hard enough, it would never be skatable, because the tides cause the surface to freeze/thaw/freeze/thaw so it is never smooth. When I was a kid, I knew boys who would ride their bikes out on the ice.... very very dangerous... But anyway, today it is only partially frozen. ( photo / image / picture from daisybeans's Garden ) ( photo / image / picture from daisybeans's Garden ) Eventually, we came to a place where the snow became too deep to wade through so we headed home. Other neighbors were finishing up their dig... so we helped out a little, juggled our cars around to make it easier to drive out if necessary, and called it a day.... It was SuperBowl Sunday so I watched the game.... (Yay, New Orleans Saints, by the way.... Of course, I am a Baltimore Ravens fan, but I rooted for the Saints. If you know the history of Baltimore and the Colts, you will understand why!! ). After a while, there was a knock at my front door. It was three young men of about 12 or 13 offering to shovel my front walk for a very fair price. They were so cute. They had been shoveling for $ all day so I know they made a good bit of dough! They laughed and tumbled around the whole time so I had to tip them for the entertainment. I was happy when I closed the door -- I will be able to get mail tomorrow after all! Another 6-10 inches have been predicted on Tuesday night and Wednesday.... What a winter!!!
What a winter indeed Daisy. I have a feeling you'll sleep well tonight after all that digging and walking. Let's hope that when the next storm hits it doesn't bring too much more snow your way. I love those snow covered lamps and the icicles are really impressive!! :-D
Thanks for taking us on a walk of your neighborhood. The photos are terrific. Those were some serious icicles. It is really beautiful when the sun comes out after the snow. I did not realize you were so close to the water, is the the Bay Bridge in the background? I love the last photo of the water where the snow got too deep and you headed back.
No Gail, that's the Key Bridge. Crosses the Patapsco. I have some pretty pics of the Bay Bridge too though. It's further away -- 15 miles or so?
I'm really hoping for a dumping of snow like that Daisybeans! (No, I haven't lost my mind! That amount of snow is typical here and we haven't had any and we really need the moisture. So you see, I'm really just thinking about the plants LOL )
