when i put the soft fruit bed in last year, blackcurrents, gooseberries, raspberries, i decided to put weed barrier down around them with mulch on top the am being to stop weed growth and trap water into the roots.

i've just been manuring the soft fruit patch, spreading manure on the surface around the plant but below the weed barrier. And found lots of new shoots coming up.

not surprising for the raspberries when i think about it.

have i made a mistake putting the membrane down? as i can easily remove it now before the plants really start to shoot. Or is it just the raspberries that it will effect?

It is only the rasps that it will effect. I have it around my currants and gooseberries and I actually think it does them good as the ground beneath always seems cool and damp. The raspberries however run all over the place and will either lift the membrane, or run further and find light at the edges of the membrane. I would be tempted to remove it from the rasps, but leave it put everywhere else.
