oncidium ornithorhynchun ( photo / image / picture from playtime8978's Garden ) This is a very pretty miniature orchid abour 3.5-4 inches tall its easy to care for with regular watering and good hunidity, its Oncidium ornithorhychum Leptotes Bicolour ( photo / image / picture from playtime8978's Garden ) Leptotes bicolour, another easy to flower orchid with terete type leaves, likes strong light and watering when the bark is dry Phalaenopsis violacea var coerulea ( photo / image / picture from playtime8978's Garden ) Phalaenopsis violacea var coerulea is a delicately scented moth orchid this was a first flowering for this orchid so I was very pleased, it must not be overwatered as the roots will rot and with it being in moss I have to be careful, but it seems happy in its medium so I have not changed it. It likes medium light levels and intermediate to warm conditions Miltonia Herr Alexandra ( photo / image / picture from playtime8978's Garden ) Miltonia Herr Alexandra is a beautiful large orchid it stands about 45-60 cm high and the flowers are delicately rose scented and large, they didnt last long though but were quite beautiful, it likes cooler temperatures and medium to bright light Vanilla planifolia ( photo / image / picture from playtime8978's Garden ) Vanilla planifolia this is not in bloom and is hard to get to bloom, this is an immature plant, the vine needs to grow to many metres long before its ready to flower and needs higher humidity and strong light and warm temps, it is the commercial vanilla pod orchid, its pods are the culinary vanilla pods we buy, it needs hand pollination in the home or greenhouse to produce the pods, it isnt an easy orchid and you need plenty of room.
What a nice array, Playtime. My favourite is the one with skinny white petals and the one purple one, the Leptotes Bicolour. Good luck wiuth that Vanilla p.. I am not much of an orchid person in the sense that I do not grow them---but boy, oh boy do I enjoy seeing the orchids that others keep.
Beautiful Playtime!! :-D Orchids are something I don't have much luck with so it's nice to see yours are thriving for you.
Oh those are so beautiful, I admire anyone that has a green thumb with orchids as I've killed more than my share. I loved that splash of orange on that lone Phalaenopsis.
Thank you everyone, I love my orchids and its always great when they bloom, I am shocked they're all still alive as I always had what I called a black thumb before I started learning how to grow orchids. I have about 60 and some do better than others but you win some you lose some, if I can keep them alright over the winter I will be happy, the problem is I have so many different species that its hard to remember what care they all need.
Orchids I'm glad you persisted with your orchids, Playtime. I've tried many times in the past and only the past 2 years have been able to keep plants alive. I have five now and have them in a small greenhouse, though they grew in the house before. Thanks for letting us know that species other than Phals can be grown indoors.
Oooh! I love the Leptotes, I really do. I almost bought a vanilla orchid the other day but I'm afraid I'll kill it if I do. The Miltonia is gorgeous, as are your other ones.
Who wants to go christmas shopping in England? My orchids got root rot an died. Tell us more of the beautys. b :-o
Love the orchids. The only one I have had luck with is a Ground Orchid. It's been blooming like mad. I have an orchid tree that has grown well... but no blooms this year.
Thanks everyone, I lost a couple at the very start to root rot, it is a problem with orchids and so easy to cause. I would love some hardy orchids but I just don't have the room in my garden for more pots just now and nowhere to store tubers over winter for the ones that need a rest. They are beautiful though
You are an orchid fairy Playtime! How beautiful! I'm afraid to try orchids. They're so pretty and I don't think I could stand it if I got one and lost it....
