Well now, isn't he a sweetheart! When you trap them and take them back, give him a bill for your time, trouble, and destroyed vegetable plants.
Living in the country has more advantages than drawbacks, but one huge drawback is townies seem to think we are a dumping ground for unwanted pets.

One of the things that drives me crazy about living in the country is the people that think it is OK to dump their garbage, tires, old furniture and yard waste in the ditches. The dump is just across the highway, but they would have to pay a few dollars to leave it there so they just dump it here. Also kittens and unwanted pets. My friend had a dog (a senior pet at that!) left at her door just last night. Poor dog looks so sad ...

Our animal services always has pet rabbits. It is the responsible place to take unwanted pets.

Oh, K! that is disheartening. So sorry to hear that. What what a waste. I still can't believe the person did that. There are plenty of organizations who take in and rehome these animals, not that I could afford to get one when I was looking for a rabbit, but other people must spend the money to get them because they take them on a regular basis. Even kids looking for a 4-h project might be interested in one.

Yes, Mr, Best. That is a very elegant solution. Miss KK, you needn't worry about the domesticated rabbits breeding with wild rabbits. They are of separate species, incapable of interbreeding. At least that is my understanding.

The perp, needs to be prosecuted, regardless of his/her health.

I would not be too sure of tame rabbits not breeding with wild rabbits. I have had tame rabbits let loose here, and I think I have seen some of their descendants around. I made a pet of one. We named him Bugs Bunny. He was a very nice rabbit, but he did NOT want back in a cage. One day I found him injured, & something had broke his back. I had to have him put to sleep at the vet's. :( He lived in my yard for several years, and stayed near our pet rabbits most of the time.

I would NEVER eat a rabbit, tame or wild. I would not give the rabbits back to the person/s who dumped them either. I have had a lot of dump pets over the years. Currently, 3 of my 5 dogs were originally dumped on me. At least two were abused in their former lives.

I have so many wild rabbits here anyway. Sometimes neighbors thin them out, and the coyotes ALWAYS thin them out.

I do think people who dump animals ought to be sorely prosecuted. In some places they are. Just because someone lives "in the country" doesn't mean they have millions of dollars to take in all the unwanted pets people dump on them. I have heard people tell how they shoot dumped animals in their neighborhood. :( Sometimes they starve, or get run over by traffic too. It just boils my blood when they do that!

I find the turning loose of the rabbits infuriating. It is such an anti-social thing to do.

We have this problem at our gardening complex every year. It usually happens about two months after easter.

Kids get pet rabbits for easter then after two months they see that keeping a pet rabbit is too much work, so the parents take them to gardens and just toss them over the fence. Incredibly anti-social behaviour...and the damage that they do in a very short period of time is immense.

Yep, this really gets right up my nose.
