Animals can be pests in the garden at times, especially when they are eating your vegetables! Have you tried putting something like a fence round your vegetables to stop animals from gaining access?
is this insect or animal damage? if it is insects, such as cabbage loopers, there is an organic dust called Bt( I have a headache and can't think if the brand name right now, sorry) that works by fooling the caterpillar into thinking it is full and it quits eating forever. do you see the "cute:" little white or yellow butterflys floating around the crop? that is a sure indicator that they are there. If it is animal damage it is probably a ground hog, but I would think they would eat the whole plant, but I have never had any animal pester my cabbage crops.
I do the daily worm & egg patrol of all plants in the Cabbage family. Brassicas? Turn the leaf over, squoosh the green worm. If I see the miniscule white eggs, I brush them away too. Should I get real lucky, which has happened only once, I kill the perpetrator, the Cabbage moth.
