In the summer of '06 I couldn't stand the sight of our very neglected planter by the back door of our church/preschool. This is the door all the parents and children go in and out of every school day and it seemed horrible to me that it was usually just dirt with a couple struggling leggy pansies and weeds. I wanted to change it in a way that would mostly care for itself, SO... I went on a bit of a binge with bulbs. I added a bit of sedum, two elijah-blue fescues and a toffee-twist sedge for interest in case it didn't fill out as I'd hoped. This is the planter in the fall of '06 after I cleaned it out, beefed up the soil and added lots of bulbs for all seasons of the year: I just hoped they would grow - even if only some of them would....and lo! This is in April of '07: I began to get compliments and exclamations about the planter - there was color in autumn and then again in early spring with snowdrops, crocuses, etc... and this last week it looked like this: Wow! The muscari really took off! I'll probably need to thin them a bit - This is the first time I've tried planning something out like this and I'm just so tickled it worked. Thought I'd show it to folks who can appreciate flowers. ;-)
You did a wonderful job on that planter! The blues are so nice, and to accent them with red tulips is a streak of genious. Well done kindhearted woman.
I would be tickled too!! I would love something like that infront here. You did a great job, and deserve being tickled. (The ribs or feet, which do you want tickled first)
What a wonderful thing for you to do and neither wonder you're getting compliments about 'your' planter. It looks absolutely fantastic - a real credit to you.
YOu did a great job, it certainly is bright and so cheerful. So do you have your sights on another neighbourhood gardening project??
Heh... I did! There's a sideyard where the teachers looked out on nothing but gravel-filled dirt and weeds that were occasionally sprayed to keep them down, so in '07 I dug out all the gravel/mud (what a job!), filled it with good soil and planted a creeping thyme for a groundcover that could take the occasional traffic of preschoolers running over it. I then loaded it with crocus bulbs. I wish I'd gotten a good picture of how it came out this spring, it was just lovely with all the purple and gold coming up through the spreading mats of thyme. For this year I'm working on my back yard a bit - but I'm certainly thinking about the front entrance of the church now. ;-)
wonderful I am sure the Lord appreciates your efforts and has rewarded you with the beauty of these blooms. It is beautiful. I love the description of the former gravel area & would love to see that too. Isn't it amazing what God has done with the plants He created?
