Last year a dear neighbor planted lots of watermelons down by the creek that runs through his property. He erected a temporary fence to protect the watermelons from predators, and checked on the melons progress every few days.
When they ripened, he called his son in Houston and told him to come up and get some watermelons (we are about a two hour drive from Houston, under the best of conditions). His son said, "Dad, melons sell for $1 around here!" His father replied, "Yeah, but these are free!"
Sometimes it just doesn't pay to get "free" if it involves a four hour round trip!
Those melons were delicious, and everyone up and down the road had all the watermelon they could handle!

So true MG! I know people who drive for hours to save a couple of dollars for an item on sale. The don't seem to account for the gas and time it takes - not to mention the wear and tear on their vehicle!

Perhaps he just wanted a visit.
Last year was a big watermelon bust around here. Coyotes started eating them green which they have never done before. Not only mine but everyone`s watermelons. Thank heavens they do not like cantaloupe.

Mart, the kids (all four with their families) visit frequently--I think he wanted to get rid of watermelons!
I have a few hills of cantaloupe in, so it's good to hear coyotes don't like them. I hope armadillos don't either!
