It is cool, overcast and gloomy here this evening. I have had a big ol pot of chili soup simmering in the crock pot all day. Sure warmed me up and was it ever good! Will have the little bit of left overs later in the week. I pigged out and ate 2 big bowls full! :smt041

No hot soup here in the tropics. A coolish breeze started blowing earlier in the day, but blew our cool due east, so we are in sauna weather again. I look forward to soup days....far in the future tho.

Ooooo, what a lovely idea Capt. Although warm here, the evenings come in chilly. I think I will make some pumpkin soup tomorrow night, with a home made loaf....if I can squeeze in a couple of extra hours in the day!

Sounds good Capt, I know we are throughly enjoying the pot of gumbo I made yesterday. We will have it for dinner tomorrow night and that should be all of it.

It's pretty much like regular chili, but runnier! We use 1 can of crushed tomatos, a small can of diced tomatos and a qt. of fresh tomatos. one lb. of hamburger fried up with onions in it. Add water to get the texture the way you want it. I usually use the wter from rinsing out the tonato cans and it would be about the size of the small can of tomatos. I add cjili seasoning 1/2 table spoon, and 2 teasoons of chili powder. Some people put red beans in it, but we don't care for it with them. I simmer it for about 6 hrs. in the crock pot. It really is more of a soup than what westerners call chilly! Heats you right up on a cool day.

All those tomatoes rules it out around here. Neither Randy nor Amanda will eat tomatoes in anywhere near their original form. :-D

A favorite soup on a cold night is a good thing.

The tomatoes are a no no here too as Ian simply won't eat them. However, I have made a BIG pot full of Scotch broth which always goes down well here. :-D

Ya'll are making me soooooo hungry!!LOL!! Capt. your chili soup would really hit the spot here!! Eileen what is Scotch Broth? It's not really cool here but we do have low humidity. We usually have almost 100% humidity so it's really nice and I think I will make a big pot of chicken and dumplings tonight!!!

Julie here's how I make Scotch broth:

    pearl barley
various pulses such as peas, lentils, rice etc.,
    lamb, chicken or beef stock
    butter,
    carrots
    turnips,
    leeks
    onions
    salt and pepper

It's really a soup for all the left over stuff you have in your cupboards and I like to make it really thick (so that the wooden spoon stands up in it). We often have it followed by a dessert and leave out the main course altogether.

I myself like my Aunt Mary's poor boy soup with cornbread (not sweet cornbread). It is so easy and she always made it for me when I was sick.
Its good anytime.Oh how I miss that lady.Heathermt made some for herself the other night .She kept it down.
Peel 4 or 5 potatoed and a small onion(cut potatoes into small squares onions too) cover with water until tender add tomato sauce salt and pepper to taste and a little bacon grease cover and simmerfor about 10 mins.

My weird auntie in England won't eat tomatoes or garlic because they are "Roman food" not British. Imagine what a pill she was when she came to visit!
What I miss most is a good pastie. Even my mother doesn't make them any more.
I used to have a nice recipe although it has been lost.
Anyone who cares to give me their recipe will receive all my gratitude.
