I was recently invited to the prize distribution ceremony of the Sport Fishing Challenge 2012. This is where all the serious game fishers of Karachi come to show-off their catch! So these are the pictures I took that day. They are not too good, as they were taken from a cell phone camera (without the flash). But I hope you guys like them. And I also am secretly hoping that this will spark off a discussion about the one that got away... So, which group won and why? What kind of fish are these anyway? We have fresh water fish where we live, I have never been to the ocean to fish and really don't plan to either.
Nice pics. Looks like fun, but like Carolyn, its freshwater fish for me. I will bite on that last statement,, tell us about the one that got away. Then you will be an honorary Texan,,everyone here has a tale about the one that got away. LOL Fish Fry anyone? I will bring the coleslaw.
Well, the first prize went to a person who caught a Mackerel, weighing in at 9.5kg! The runner-up was another guy who caught a 8.5kg Queenfish. And the 3rd prize went to someone who caught a 7.75kg Barracuda! There was a category for children, and another for the ladies too. But since I arrived late to the event, I didn't get a chance to see what they caught. But there where of course many tales flung into the air about "the one that got away" - But that I guess is something which happens almost everywhere in the world! Our sea however also has got the Marlin, Sharks, as well as something called the Giant Reef Cod - Which is said to be a true challenge to catch. As it has a very nasty habit of entangling your fishing line in the reef and rocks. But aside from all of these, we have lots of ocean mammals too. Like Dolphins, and huge Whales as well. Our Dolphins have somehow developed a very friendly relationship with the Navy. Spacially when it comes to the submarines - One Navy guy told me that they are exactly like Dogs of the sea. So just like on land if a Dog ses a car, he will give it a chase - Same is the case with our Dolphins! And for some unknown reason, they seem to love hanging around our submarines a lot. Just see the first 20 seconds of this video clip - You'll clearly see them jumping out of the water in front of the sub! The video however is the story of the PNS Ghazi Submarine, that was lost (after making military history) in the 1971 war we fought with India. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kBf1qhxbSU
I love to fish. Didn't do any this past summer.Got me a new Ugly Stick rod. Never seen the ocean. Dh was all in Navy. Seen on local tv -guy caught 60# flat head catfish.
Kaismum, I think all the fish eventually got eaten. Must were bar-be-cued at night, at this same place. Skins of some of them were saved I am sure, (so they can be stuffed and mounted on a wall). But before any of that, lots of pictures were taken, and many interviews given to the radio and TV channels!
