Was out walking in the yard a little this morning and noticed I have Tiger Lilly's up on the east end of the house. The reason they are up already is that the basement wall collects heat from the sun in the mornings, so the dirt is warmer there!
Don't you just love micro-climates? We put in an herb bed next to the stone foundation of our house in upstate NY, and we had fresh herbs most of the winter. Of course, I had to dig around in the snow first . . . .
Our generic orange daylilies come up in stages depending on their distance from the house. Hmmmmm....I wonder if putting black boxes over areas of the garden in the spring would cause selected plants to emerge earlier? Then the same type of plant in separate groups would flower over a longer period of time Just curious, Jerry
While I was out walking, I also noticed what I call snot grass starting to come up. It comes up from a small buld and in late May or early June it gets little star shaped white flowers on it. It grows wild. But if you mow it, it has so much juice in it, it's slicker than snot. Hence the knick name!
spring can't be too far....bulbs are starting to come up....and...i went to the hardware store to buy a new flagpole and bought my first packets of seeds....sunflowers & cosmos.....that has to be a sure sign...plus the days are getting longer....it's still light at 6 p.m.
Daylight savings time is less than 2 weeks away. More sun to melt the snow. More fun in the sun. Jerry
This morning I was getting the empty garbage cans out at the road and could hear 3 or 4 Red Wing Blackbirds singing. Sure sounded like spring! Also saw a chipmonk out in the yard, so they are out of hibernation too.
Our chipmunk tunneled through 20 inches of snow, was up for a couple of days, then it snowed. We haven't seen him since. The house finches have visited their usual nesting site to check it out. Jerry
