Goooooood Morning GardenStew ! ( forgive my sgt. Cronauer imitation)
It’s a case of too much time and too much rain.

That said, I have put together a little quiz that I hope (those of you that will be inclined to participate) you will find fun and interesting. The sources of the questions come from info found on the internet, from off the Roots rip-a-page-off calendar and my own experience.

There are no rules or time limits on this quiz, but I am hoping that you will take the quiz twice— the first time using only what is between your ears and if you want, a second time to discover the answers. If you are too busy to look it up, you can wait for my posting with the answers.

Right then, let’s get down to business:

I will post the answers late this afternoon (my time). Folks will have then had twenty-four hours to contemplate their answers and those that want to participate will have done so I think.

    Good luck !

    1. Probably not, although slugs eat my narcissus flowers.
    2. I've never looked before! My guess is those are sensory receptors but not eyes.
    3. Probably. But then is it Oak Fever?
    4. That is the trunk of the tree growing in the field. :). OK, maybe a hazelnut? I don't know.
    5. Captain Nemo saw those and said "That's my rose!"
    6. Sudden Oak Death.
    7. That's a paw print of the dreaded "Pandasaurus rex".
    8. I thought the both were.
    9. Ditto.
    10. I think they all will.
11 - 16. I'm totally flunking this quiz. I need to call in sick today. I wonder if that digitalis is a tetraploid transformation...
    17. Probably B. I routinely grow five-year old tomato seeds but have also grown ten year old tomato seeds. Older ones do start more slowly (like I do) but sone still germinate. That's just stored in my cool pantry, not frozen.
    18. My guess is oxalic acid.
    19. Oh dear. Time to turn in my garden license. I completely flunked the exam!

    Thanks @Sjoerd for interesting questions!

    Here are the “official” answers:

1– Snails do not like to eat narcissus plants. T / F

Narcissus plants contain poisonous elements but snails do not like the foliage because the cells have sharp “needles” to deal with. The answer is False.

    2– View attachment 23648

Garden snails have four eyes on stems. T / F

A snail has two eyes and two tentacles to feel with. The answer is False.

3– Can you get hay fever from oak pollen?

    The answer is Yes.

4– This is the trunk of which tree? View attachment 23649

This is the trunk of an Ash tree.

5– How did this plant get it’s name (Anemone nemorosa)? View attachment 23650

Many plants have a Latin name; however, the Anemone got its name from the Old Greeks and you can read about it in the works of Theophrastus, a student of Aristotle. It comes from the Greek word, anemos the word or wind. Perhaps because the little petals flutter with the gentlest wind.

6– What is a common name for the plant pathogen, Phytophthora?

    A common name is Blight.

    7– What is this?
    View attachment 23651

These are little depressions made by common sparrows to take a “dust bath” in.

    8– Which are compatible, A or B?
    A— Beans and broccoli
    B— Cauliflower and beans

    The answer is, Neither.

    9– Which are compatible, C or D?
    C— Strawberries and beans
    D— Spinach and beans

    The answer is, Both.

10– Dill, Tagetes, rosemary and Thyme...which plants discourage pests?

The answer is, All of them.

11– What does a tree creeper ( Certhia brachydachtyla) and a woodpecker have in common?
    View attachment 23652

A tree creeper is a song bird and so is not related to a woodpecker. However, they do have one similarity: stiff tail feathers. The tree creepers use them for support just like the woodpecker when they are climbing up a trunk.

12– How many droppings can a house mouse drop in a day?
    A—50
    B—75
    C—90

The answer is 50. A house mouse can be found not only in houses, but also in the allotment garden sadly.

    13– These are mushrooms. T / F
    View attachment 23653

What you see in the foto are spore pods of the Comatricha nigra and belongs to the group, slime molds and therefore are more related to amoebas than fungi (which the mushrooms fall under). The answer is False.

14– Alchemilla mollis (Lady’s Mantel) is in the rose family. T / F

The Lady’s Mantel is in the Family, Rosaceae— Roses.

15– Guess the Family of the Forget-Me-Not (Myosotis). Hint: Their blooms are eaten on salads.

    The answer is, Boraginaceae—Borage

16– What is going on with this Digitalis plant?
    View attachment 23654

The aberrancy is called Fasciation. It can be caused by the usual suspects—hormones, genetics, bacteria, fungus or viral.

17– Generally speaking, how long can you save tomato seeds?
    A— 1-2 years
    B— 2-6 years
    C— 7-10 years

The answer is C— 7-10 years.

18– What does Rhubarb and Spinach have in common?

Both these plants contain Oxalic acid.

    19– A late-comer: What is a Ratte?

    The answer.......is potato.

Thanks to those folks who participated —posted and non-posted alike.
That was the quiz, I hope that you enjoyed it and also had some fun. The questions came from several places, but a number of the answers are to be found right here on this website. I know because I posted them myself.

So then, who is the winner here? How many correct answers did you get? Come on, tell.

You’re welcome, Daniel. I really enjoyed doing it.

DM— What a great compliment. Cheers. So, you do Wordl too. We do that in Dutch and English...what a great beginning of the day.
I will think about doing another one, but I am not so sure how much the colleagues here are interested. I am guessing everyone is too busy at this time of the season.

I’m glad you liked it. The score isn’t actually important. It was primarily meant for fun, but also for education and of course there was some trivia to collect.

    Hahaha, ... is potato!

I managed to get eight right. As for the rest I had no clue, but that means I've learned something today so I didn't get out of bed for nothing.

    Thanks for providing the answers.
