Thanks all. The waterbutt next to the greenhouse is exactly that, a waterbutt. Unfortunately, we have no piped water on our lottie so we have to save every drop, so, fingers crossed, this weekend, hubby will create some sort of guttering from the greenhouse into the butt for me. The greenhouse is proving to be a handy holding station for the overflow of plants from my home greenhouse. I have already planted three tomato plants, two cucumber plants, and aubergine and a chilli plant in great big pots in there. I also have several melon plants which may end up in there also. I plan to have it overflowing with greenery. The raspberrys were given to me by an allotment neighbour before she moved and she called them autumn bliss and yes, they are golden orangey yellow, but there is no label so,she may have forgotten what they were really called. They are delicious!
I liked how you began this thread with a promise...and ended with a sort of promise...or almost a "threat". Those rhubarbs are just sitting there looking so green and innocent...and all the while the x-file like roots are quietly making plans of sending up monstrous leaf stems. Will you be covering/forcing the leaves? I was so delighted to see you on here again and it was good to hear your news, but what I have REALLY been looking forward to was the two postings--one of your flowering plant endeavours and this one. I have commented on your flower garden thread, now this one. I see that you are taking no chances with using the linked fencing. Do the muntjacks spring over it, or is it a bit too difficult for them. I can see that their browsing will be limited. Good job you two!. I can see that your soil there is a bit stony which gives you good drainage, right? Such a shame that you guys can't get piped water, but the water butts will help. That new greenhouse looks a lot like the one thsat we have in terms of construction and size. It already has a little mini gutter on it. You only have to block off one end and then get the downpipe from the company that makes the greenhouse (or the dealer). I know those raspberries that you are talking about. An allotmenteer near us has a couple of that type of bush. He doesn't know the name either. What is that shoeshine kit-looking white thing in amongst the onions and garlics--a slug trap? That's a good cage to protect your kohl rabi's. Did you plant seeds in there, or will you first let them grow in the greenhouse or in the conservatory before planting out? Do you have trouble with mice? Your Swiss Chard sorts is looking good.I planted new a few weeks ago...the darn mouse dug-up and ate some of the seeds...or perhaps it was a birdie. I have never forced rhubarb before Sjoerd, I aleays forget and by the time I remember, the bubby is already growing like crazy. The muntjac deer are small, the size of our labrador, and although they could probably clear the fence, because we are all fencing our plots,me paths are narrow and I don't think they would be able to easily. I spotted lots of tracks on the paths this weekend, but none on our actual plot which is fab. As for the greenhouse guttering, Yep, Mark acquired a downpipe for our model of house, and rain is forecast tonight and again tomorrow afternoon so hopefully, when I next venture onto the site, my waterbutt will be filled. The White thing in amongst the garlics is a plastic cloche which I had used to cover some lettuce plants, just to give them a couple of days extra protection. The cloches come in very handy, I have about six. The kohl rabi were started in cell trays in the greenhouse, they are a purple variety, I have now directly sown some green ones, but as soon as they start to emerge, they will need pigeon protection. Things are really starting to emerge now, and according to mister weatherman, the temperatures are just going to keep going up now somitmwont be long before I start putting out more tender plants.
Lots of goodies coming along EJ,..love your new Greenhouse,..mine is only half that size amazing how quick one can fill them with plants and seedlings.
...a clooooooach...ohhhhh, Right. I have not seen one of that sort before, Are you pleased with it? I assume that the bottom is simply open so that you can just slip it over the plants. Kohl rabi is so tasty. I hope that you have good luck with yours. Darn wood pigeons. We had some nice and warm weather over here today. It was niiiiiiiiice.
