Well they figured out how to get past the slippery pole! They kept jumping on it until the had all of the oil spray rubbed off. So today I rigged up an alternate way of hanging the feeder. I took a piece of coated stell cable, like you would use for a clothes line to dry laundry out side. Stretched it from the top of the shepherds crook to a tree. The feeder hangs right in the middle. But the cable is not tight, it is loose so that it hangs down a little. The raider came up and studied it from the ground, climbed the tree and put a front foot on the cable. He soon realised that it was too thin for him to walk out on and too shakey besides. He climbed back down and ate seeds from the ground that the birds had dropped. Pretty soon he walked off looking pretty glum about it! I think I can say I WON ! :-o
Sooo the war wasn't won after all. Never mind I'm sure you'll find a solution to your squirrel problem soon. At least you can say it's keeping your mind active trying to defeat the little rascals if nothing else.
What I find amazing is you can watch them setting and looking at it and theirlittle brains are just whirring trying to figure out a way to get past the obstacle. Whoever called them Dumb Animals were very mistaken.
I know how it is.My friends has hadthe problems you have with squirrels and raccoons and they put theirs on a really light wire like a clothes line but smaller and they would walk on it upside down even when it was not very tight. They will sit and figure it out.
Ah, you know they're all sitting around the campfire putting their heads together about how to address this.... I just love your accounts of the each battle, CK. You're as tenacious as they are!
Well, 3 days now and they haven't found out how to get to it. He climbed the pole once and put one foot out on the wire and it swayed, so he came back down the pole. He tried climbing the tree and looked at it, but didn't do anything. So now he is content to eat the seeds that the birds drop on the ground from the suet block!
he doesn't work out how to get to your feeder. Do let us know if he manages to find a way to get his little paws on it won't you?
Well, it's been about 2 weeks and the squirrels have given up trying to get to the feeder. They eat the seeds that have fallen on the ground and they look up at it every once in a while.
