I start to count the different birds that come to the deck through the winter. I start on the 1st Oct. I have my list that I have used for a couple of years. It has most of the regulars listed. I don't count the males and female separate as I think that I get both sexes. On the start day the Steller's jay arrived, most of the other visitors have been here most of the summer. Usually start with 10 or 12 and work up to 20 each day.

I have always kept a running list (nothing elaborate) of all the birds that we see in your yard. It is at 37 now. Probably not allot but it is for us. We have trouble identifying them. LOL

I do a bird count for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds each year. It helps them to know which species are on the decline or are increasing in numbers. I do it on a monthly basis so that they can also tell which birds arrive/leave during the seasons.
