I have a ton of sticker bushes in my back yard. I have cut them down to the ground, but what can I put on the stumps to kill them. They are about 3-4 inches in diameter and look like vines. As they grow they get skinney branches and stickers all over. They grow like weeds and have taken over my whole back yard. Thanks for any help.
Sorry Richie I don't know what a sticker bush is as I come from Scotland. Does it have another name that you know of?
Eileen, Maybe they are also called thornes. I too am not sure what they are called. They have these short pointed thorns all over the branches.
Well, my dad always used roundup. Now, the assistant librarian at our local library said they cut a tree down and didn't want to dig out the stump so they put a black plastic flower pot over it in the fall and it the spring it was saw dust. Bugs, etc worked on it all winter. I guess if they are all over your yard you can't do that. I have to laugh at the idea of black flower pots all over your yard. I guess there is too many to dig, too. Oh, our neighbor behind us had a propane torch and he burned some out. You'd have to be really careful doing that or you'd start too much burning. I can't think of anything else now. Dooley
You can use Roundup but you will need to let them grow some leaves for it to stick to. You could call a professional if you have a large area. They often have a mix of chemicals to help the herbicide to cling to the plant. The chemical that aids this is known as a "sticker." Anyway, you'd best wait until spring now as your nuisance sticker bushes will need to be actively growing for an herbicide to work. muddy
