In my garden I have 2 containers with bamboo. Last year we had a very long, cold winter, but they survived without as much as a single dead leaf.

This year we only had 2 weeks of very cold weather, and somehow it didn't quite agree with the bamboo. It keeps folding & unfolding it's leaves, so one moment it looks quite dead, and a few hours later the leaves have opened up again.

It's not frost damage (looks quite different), nor have they dried out (once they'd thawed out, I watered them).
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this touch-me-not behaviour?
    Thanks!

Well, it appears both bamboo plants have decided they are dead after all: there have been a few more open/close episodes, but now they are really shrivelling up and going yellow and brown.
    Boohoo...... :'(

Sounds like the long winter last year damaged them to the point that when the cold snap happened this year they just didn't have enough life left in them to survive another stress.

Hadn't thought of that, Toni, but you're probably right!
I guess it's off to the garden centre to buy a couple more plants in a few weeks time, and I must remember to insulate their pots next winter.
