I know absolutely nothing about melons. But I just wanted to comment that it looks very much like a dried gourd I have.

Which probably doesn't help anyone, since I have no clue how those dried gourds that are so prevalent around Halloween even come to be!

My first thought was a Hopi squash. I'm growing them this year. But, gourd makes sense too. Now that I've gone outside to look, your fruit looks like my squash but the leaves appear slightly different.

Have you got a volunteer coming up in your melon patch? I've had that happen and when the plants are young, it's hard to tell the difference. I've guessed wrong a couple of times.

These are strange looking melons, none like I have ever seen before. Do let us know if you find out what type they are :)

Very old heirloom. Cushaw used to be quite popular. I have tried them here couple of years back but no luck with Texas drought. Need to try them again. If I remember correctly they are like a cantaloupe in that they separate from the vine when ripe. Not sure though,,could have been a different one.
