They really appeared out of nowhere (within 24 hours). The rainy season (Monsoon season) arrived about 2 months later here in Karachi. So after a few days of light rain, I get these. Not exactly sure what type they are. Even if they are edible, I still will not take the chance. But they are very interesting to look at - That's why I am posting these 2 pictures. Mushrooms over here in Karachi are very rare. I've only seem a few in my life. So (for me at least), this is a very rare sight. They by the way are only about 2 and a half inches tall, and unlike other mushrooms, they don't seem to open up like an umbrella - Rather they stay like this, and amazingly also vanish the next day. Most interesting pictures, very unusual shape. it is fascinating how mushrooms seem to appear out of nowhere. If they are gone the next day then it must quickly releases spores. Jerry
Thanks Jerry (for liking my pictures). By the way, I just now found these 2 more mushrooms of another kind growing - Or rather I should say *hiding* in the corner. And these are really big ones. It is very strange that before I could hardly find any mushrooms in my garden. yet now I have 2 different kind in a span of 2 days? How on Earth is this possible??? Perhaps it's because the Monsoon season (the rainy season) arrived a whole 2 months late this year. But than again, I don't think mushrooms are seasonal - Are they? Hi S-H, we have some similar to your first two,..but the second two are alien to me,..they look like something you could eat,..but don't,..give them to an old friend, ,..just kidding,..i love raw Mushrooms and for some reason the last two made my mouth water,..i think its the colouration. Amazing how you seldom see Mushrooms in your area,..its a constant surprise what we all have or don't have in each country.
Believe it or not, but the giant mushroom in my last 3 pictures uploaded in this thread - Just got even bigger! Yup, it's now slightly over a foot in diameter! And not only that, many more mushrooms have started to appear out of nowhere (of different types). I still am wondering how this has happened over here, as previously we would hardly get to see any mushrooms in our gardens. Only difference (a change in the environment) that I can think of - Is that the rainy season started a whole 2 months late. We got 2 thunderstorms in the last 2 days (totaling to about 5+ inches of rainfall). And there is also another thunderstorm forecast for today! All this at the time when the Monsoon season (rainy season) would be coming to an end... Very fascinating. Mushrooms are seasonal here, and we do have some that come up after the first rains in the fall. Hope you can find out what they are.
So perhaps this is why I don't get to see Mushrooms as often as others. Because by fall season, the rains would have ended. Hence little moisture around to support mushroom growth. This year the Monsoon season came very late, a whole 2 months late. So now we are getting heavy rains at this time of the year. Otherwise, we would right now be getting a blazing hot sun (with daytime temperatures in the high 30s or low 40 ºC). Yes, even our Fall season is very hot. In fact the heat starts from mid April, and lasts till late October or early November. The rainy Monsoon season that brings torrential rains is from early or mid June to Mid August (the only time it rains over here). From late November to mid February, it becomes cool. But my definition of "cool" is more like the Summers in northern Europe. And so from mid February to lat March, we get a little bit of Spring. Sometimes we do have Winter rains in December. But it is somewhat rare. This picture below is the current weather position. The red dot is where city of Karachi is. Weather Map 12-09-2011 ( photo / image / picture from S-H's Garden )
Remember the strange Mushrooms at the start of this thread? The ones that did not open up - Well, turns out that they do open up after all. They only require a break from the constant rainfall. Otherwise they'll just melt away in the rain. Mushrooms are really interesting. There are so many good and bad ones, it is interesting to see any of them. Thanks for letting us see yours!
Hi S-H, gosh those last ones are very attractive looking,..and the egg like ones well i never come across any of those here,..between yourself and Jerry you have posted some real interesting mushroom pictures.
Well, I for one am just amazed to see so many different types of Mushrooms - All growing in my home, and that too at the same time! As I had said over here before, Mushrooms are very rare in Karachi. Only reason that I can think, of why so many are now growing - Is that it is raining in September (which is not at all like the usual weather pattern). Locally Mushrooms are sometimes called "saanp ki chatree", meaning the umbrella of a snake - As it is said that baby snakes would like to hide under it in the rain. I have been told this since childhood, so that I do not accidentally run into a snake by admiring a Mushroom. Of course, we don't have any garden snakes over here. We've only got the extremely poisonous ones like the leaf nosed viper, desert cobras, and the kraits - So even the thought of encountering anyone of of them, is enough for me to look at every Mushrooms with extreme caution. So only after I make sure that there is no baby snake hiding under it, am I able to appreciate the Mushroom in my garden. By the way, as for as I can remember, this is perhaps the 4th or 5th time in my life that I have seen Mushrooms growing... So that's how rare they are over here.
