While I was out walking my dogs before bed tonight, I noticed an unusual orange ball low in the western sky. It is shortly after midnight here, so it is not the sun, nor was it the moon. That rose and set already tonight and was much larger and closer in appearance than this. I am not an astronomer, so have no idea except perhaps one of the planets? Does anyone know what it might be ?

No idea I'm afraid. I checked a couple of astronomy sites but couldn't find anything that might have been what you saw.

If I understand some of the things I just finished reading, it could have been Jupiter you saw and another site mentioned Saturn being especially close and bright.

That time of night and if you were looking southwest then it was Saturn, at a magnitude of 0.8 it would be easy to see.
