I was trying to pick squash today without getting stuck in the mud, and a gentleman I have never seen before pulled into the barn drive and came to the fence. He wanted to BUY some squash! Strange, very strange. Here I was trying to judge if I could toss some squash into the back of his truck without him noticing, and he actually wanted to pay cash money for squash! Didn't he know you avoid gardeners with squash plants, and never, never, never actually pay money for squash. Bless his little naive heart! He left with four nice squash and my heartfelt thanks.
When I lived in south Florida there was a very productive Mango tree in the side yard. We didn't like Mangos so they usually laid on the ground going bad until I got out to throw them away. One afternoon a truck filled with day labor construction workers stopped and one came to the door asking about buying the Mangos. I told him that if they brought their own bags or boxes they could stop by every day and keep the ripe ones from going bad. Every day the truck would stop, about 6 guys would get out of the back with grocery sacks and load them up. They were happy and so was I.
That is nice you girls could share your bounty with others. I have a few black walnut trees, and do not like black walnuts. It is very rare that I can even give them away. Usually the squirrels get them and plant them in my flower beds. I have to pull up the baby trees because I want my flowers more than another black walnut tree. However, when I find them, I toss them into the woods where they can grow freely. I have occasionally dug them up and replanted them someplace away from my flowers.
Jane...just how much rain did you get? I was gone for a day and didn't keep up with much anywhere except at home... (another torrential downpour a county away...horrible and awful for them, I was just glad we didn't get it).
Carolyn, we got a tad over 4" spread over three days. We hadn't seen a puddle for so long we had to look it up in the dictionary! Ronni, expect a very large package delivered to your doorstep! I'd gladly share the bounty with you if I could :-D !
Greenfingers, kindness? As to squash, giving it away is about the only method of coping with a superabundance. It's only kind if the recipient wants the squash!
At my church, members who have gardens and too much of something bring it to church and give it away to anyone who wants some. Maybe you could try it at your church? Also, local food pantries will accept donations of fresh produce. They do around here.
Anightowl, I take most of my "extra" produce to our local food pantry--it's always accepted with little cries of glee! I've even planted extra to have extra. We no longer attend a church--I just go out to the garden and say little prayers of thanksgiving!
I give most of my extra veg to the Food Bank...if it wasn't for them I would be covered in a tidal wave of courgettes, beans and so forth. Luckily I do not have to "waste" them in the compost bin any longer.
We also take our extra apples to church, and things from garden to church. Have to trim our apple trees even more -over loaded last year.
