We decided to build a high tunnel over the strawberry bed in the Fall. We are just starting to pick them and the berries outside are just in bloom. Today we picked 21 pints to sell. I want to put tunnels over all the strawberry beds. I actually like to pick them this way. Mmmm those look delicious. My strawberries are nowhere near the stage of yours. I don't think I've ever seen so many strawberry plants in one place before.
Hiya C--What a nifty idea. It looks like you are already having a great success. I'll bet your customers are thrilled at having strawbs already. Way t'go. miss!
Eileen And S, We are only picking this early due to the high tunnel I am amazed at how much earlier they are than the outside berries...Maybe about 3 weeks. Today we had a driveway crew working on the driveway and we didn't have anyplace for people to park. The crew was great about letting the few in that came, but it wasn't very convenient, so I didn't sell all of them, we are enjoying eating the left overs.
They look juicy as anything Carolyn. It's obvious they are happy in their present growing environment.
Hi Carolyn,..nice going,..you will be ahead of anyone else selling outside grown strawberries,..three weeks is a good gap.
Frank, they are juicy. Nothing like the store ones. Cheryl what kind are you growing? Do they grow year round for you or do you replant every spring? Nothing as tasty as a warm from the garden berry. Bunkie, Don't start too small. I don't think I would go any smaller than a 15x32 for any high tunnel. Philip, they are a little early and people aren't expecting them yet. I couldn't sell all of mine yeaterday, but we were having the driveway worked on and people didn't know where to park. so I am eating the last of them this morning. Capt, I would save you some if you wanted. I'll be picking again in the morning and we are have a town square festival tomorrow, which I will be attending as a vendor and you could come have a great day trip, see the many booths and "stuff" there, get you berries and have a wonderful day.
Carolyn... I'm growing Quinalt (I think I spelled it right). I just planted them this spring. They are doing okay so far.
Cheryl, I have heard of those, but not planted any. Can you grow them year round or not? is it too warm for them during the winter or do you get enough cold weather for them to crop nicely? I really know nothing about growing fruit in your weather.
Carolyn.... I have no clue because this is the first time I've grown any strawberries here. If I remember correctly, they are supposed to produce all year (I'm assuming they mean from spring to frost) instead of fruiting all at the same time for one big harvest.
