I checked my strawberry plant today and it has little "plantlets" (for lack of a better term) at the ends of long, kind of straggly stems -- take a look: Strawberry plant... ( photo / image / picture from daisybeans's Garden ) What should I do with them? Let them ramble or tuck them up in the pot to root? I have never had a strawberry plant before. I got it from the bargain table at the nursery without a tag. Neighbor thought it might be a strawberry -- it looks different from the others but kind of similar... mystery plant... Well that sounds like good news, Netty, thanks. The plant is growing in a pot -- so, do the runners need to be in pots too? And be able to reach dirt? That is probably a silly question, but you know me.
I had that thought too, CB, but no... no scent, no taste... I feel like I know what it is, but I'm missing a connection...
There are a number of things that you can do with the runners, Daisy. If the plant is fruiting, I removve them. If it has finished fruiting, let the little plantlets root in small pots of soil, and once they have established themselves, clip the runner from the 'mother plant'and let them become larger. Then you can plant these in a bed or larger pot in august. It's a good way to get more plants.
