Substitute for bark dust around my roses?

    We are laying bark dust through out our whole yard but I've heard that it's not good to lay bark dust around your roses........well I've got 11 yellow roses bushes along my sidewalk and would like to know what I can lay around the bushes to look somewhat like bark dust so it just doesn't go from bark dust to dirt. Any ideas?

    Roses like lime and the bark is alcaline. I've heard that too but our neighbours have roses in bark, and they're doing very well. I guess it all depends on the rose types.
