How often should I change the suet cakes in the winter for my furry little friends? I notice that with the cold temps they become pretty brittle like they are freezing. I do not make my own yet I use already made suet cakes. Any advice for me?
We have always just left ours out until they are gone. When we lived in upstate NY, the cakes would freeze, but then all other food sources were frozen, also. The birds would peck at the suet cake until they got something to eat (I think the exercise helped keep them warm!). Why not try leaving one out and see what happens? Here in Texas the cakes don't freeze, but we have to be careful they don't melt!
I leave mine until the are gone too. They are frozen this time of year but the birds don't seem to mind.
I do the same as MG, I just leave them until they have been totally consumed, then I just put another one out. I suppose that the things freeze, but the animals still seem to know how to get the seeds and I believe that they eat the "fat" too, as their body would be asking for it during the winter. Thanks everyone I just wanted to make sure if they freeze that they could still eat them. I been watching them pretty close and they don't seem to have a problem but I wanted to check since we are getting into the hard winter here in Indiana! Thanks again for the help
