I have 2 crook neck squash plants and are they ever going to town. One plant has 12 buds on it but none are blooming yet. The other has one bloom and 8 other buds on it. I am going to have more squash than I know what to do with! I just got a recipe that I haven't tried yet. It's for squash fritters. The squash has to be grated. If it's any good, I will grate them up and then freeze them. Also if its any good, I will post it in the cooking section.
Not that you want to do it yet...because you want some squash to actually set. ...But squash BLOSSOMS are wonderful to eat. You dredge the blossoms thru egg, sift some butter on each side, and fry them in oil. Salt & pepper. Enjoy. I do this when I start to have way too many squash, the freezer is full, and I can't even give them away.
I've heard that squash blossoms are very tasty, but I've never tried them. I used to pick them for a friend when I had too many. My squash plants are an inch tall if that Capt.
You can actually fill the squash flowers and cook/fry them. Here is a link. http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/veggies/ssquash1.html
Help ! I have squash coming out my ears! I have frozen about 20 dhredded ones for squash bread and have given so many away, my neighbors hide when I pull into their driveway. I have given away so many at exercise, they asked me not to bring any more in. And right now I have about 20 young ones on the plants. I have harvested about 60 already. All of that from 2 plants! It's about time to yank them out of the ground!
Here's a website CK that might give you some new ideas about what to do with your excess squash. :-D http://www.barfoots.co.uk/iqs/cpti.8/recipes.html
I take the male bloom ( they wont be on the end of a little squash just on a stem). While they are still open wash and drain on paper towel.I make a batter and dip the bloom and place in hot oil let brown drain on paper towel and then enjoy.
Wish you lived nearby so I could "take some of those off your hands" haha. Try www.allrecipes.com We had an excess of zucchini last year, and found some casseroles here. I use squash and zucchini interchangeably in these recipes. Have fun!!
I will probably yank them out of the ground in a week or so. I am about to run out of room in my freezer. I never dreamed they would do this good. I guess the hot humid weather we have been having is good for them!
Captain, maybe you could make some extra money and sell your squash to a nearby produce stand? Or donate to a food bank?
Our local food bank will only take non-perishable foodstuffs. They don't have a lot of business so what they do have has to be able to set on the shelves for days or even weeks at a time. For fresh stuff like meat etc, they give out certificates to the grocery stores.
Too many squash? What did you do to them to get so many squash? my plants had zillions of blooms and then produced no squash.....
All I did was water them and use Miracle grow on them every other week. I did yank them out of the ground this morning. The main stalk was about 3 foot long on each of them. They were from seeds that I got from the local hardware store. I have been shredding them and putting them in freezer bags. 1 cup to a bag. I have about 30 cups of them for this winter.
I sure will have to try something different with my squash next time. i wonder if it is too late to start over.......
