I know what you mean about squirrel damage to seedlings. I cover the area with chickenwire which seems to deter them.

We use that netting that keeps birds and deer off berry bushes...it is light and everything can still grow...we had to use it to keep the sweet little things out of my strawberries last summer...also doesn't hurt to feed them somewhere far from your garden...

I started a few sunflowers to I never had the red velvet ones or the choc. ones so I started those along with the yellow, Have any of you had the red ones. They look beautiful on the pack, I planted quite a few I have a few places I thought they might cover, They are all different heights. :stew2:

I have used chicken wire formed over a bowl snd staked to the ground using large "U" shaped stakes made from coathangers.

    hello

Margie, I had the red velvet sunflowers and they are gorgeous! This year I'm gonna try vanilla ice! I also had teddy bears last year and they are cute. I love sunflowers all shapes and sizes!

Ya those little rascals can be a problem. You could also try putting Blood meal over the area where the seeds are planted. You will have to reapply it after it rains. But it does work on some of the critters to keep them at bay.
