I just had a huge surprise and found a large black snake in my back hallway. I have no idea how he found his way indoors. Thankfully, my son was here and he put him back outdoors safely. It was a black king snake, about 3 1/2 to 4 ft long. At least he is the 'harmless' kind of snake and gets rid of things like rodents and copperheads. A surprise like that could give a person a heart attack though. He was right by my bedroom doorway. :-o   :-o

My heavens, that was quite a surprise! However, I must congratulate you on having the snake taken outdoors, rather than killing it. You're a good person, and just got a gold star by your name on the list that Mother Nature keeps!
When the weather gets hot and dry here, I have to be careful when picking up buckets or watering cans. If there is water in them the container may also contain a snake. Cool, comfortable--your house must have been very attractive to the black snake.

It is incredibly unusual for snakes to come into our homes here in the UK, but we do have plenty on the allotment. Just last week I encountered an adder when collecting water from the waterbutt, and they have a nasty bite, and the kids spotted a grass snake under my apple tree a few days later. I adore snakes, we have a pet Corn Snake, but it does always make me jump when I spot them in the wild.

I have a pet snake too AA so I'm really pleased to hear that you and your son allowed it to have its freedom. I wonder how a snake that size managed to get into your house though? Intriguing.

I can't remember the last time I saw a snake. I wish I saw them more often...there are a LOT of field mice around here!

I do not get any gold stars...if it had been a copperhead or a rattler or other venomous snake, it would have died for sure. I try not to hurt the harmless ones; but I draw the line on poisonous snakes in my yard, or definitely in my home ! Thankfully, I have never had a poisonous snake in my home. I do get them in my yard sometimes and have to get rid of them in self defense.

Netty, you can come and collect snakes here... ;) I am terrified of snakes and have no wish to get chummy with them. I sure do not want them in my bedroom. I had a couple of snakes get in a few summers ago, under the front storm door. I re did the whatchamacallit boards at the bottom of the door so they could not come in any more. I thought I had fixed things around the pipes, but maybe I missed someplace?

I don't know what I'd do if I saw a snake, venomous or otherwise, in my yard or my house... Makes me short of breath just to think about it.... though I did see one once hanging in a bush in the desert and I was OK with that one.

We have a neighbor whose house was added on to again and again, evidently. The walls of the original cabin were never removed during construction and housed a big black snake living within them. the snake would slither out into the hallway and bathroom and hang out there. They would just step over it walking through the house. They said they have never had rodents of any kind in their house. I don't know if they still have it or not, sometime I will have to ask them

When it comes to snakes... if they leave me alone, I'll leave them alone. I just can't seem to remember "good ones" from the "bad ones". and what's that saying... red & yellow will kill a fellar. Or was it kill The fellar?
I do remember getting a good spanking from my grandma for killing a King snake when I was little.

A king snake is very useful to keep away poisonous snakes. I would not have spanked a kid, but guess I would have told them not to again. My kids were playing with snakes by the time they were toddlers--scared me a lot, but with 3 boys, I figured I was safer not telling them I was terrified of snakes. Though, when my oldest was 12, they asked me point blank about it. They had a snake in church and were trying to find a jar for it. They accidently scared the tar out of their great grandmother. She had to tell me about my boys, so I had to explain to them that some people are terrified of snakes, etc. I had to forbid them from taking any snake into church again. They were wanting to take it home, and I had a rule about them traveling in the car. An elderly lady near our church used to pay the kids $2 a jug to haul them away for her. She had hundreds of them living around her home for some reason and of course, she did not want them.

Cheryl, I cant recall that saying either. I had to get a field guide so I would know what to tell my kids to leave alone. [not that they listened too much]

I guess finding a baby tiger snake in front of our toilet was scary too. The babies are more poisonous than the big ones!!! No idea how it got in either...

This is an interesting post. I knew black snakes were "good" snakes. I think it's pretty funny that in AA's house there were rules like "don't take snakes to church or ride them in cars." Very cute, AA. Smart move, not telling your boys you were scared of snakes... the temptation to torment you would have been toooo much to ignore!

Daisy, the rule about the car was it HAD to be shut inside some kind of jug or soda bottle, not loose. I told them if it got loose and went up my leg we would have a big car wreck... We would have too ! They wanted to keep the snakes from the elderly lady near our church, but I refused on that one. I made them turn them loose along the highway in the ditches... "But Mom, they will get run over!" and I answered "So?" They were only garter snakes which are technically 'harmless'... No thanks anyway.

My boys were/are very interested in nature and all kinds of animals. ... There was the time that they asked, "Mom, how do you tell a boy frog from a girl frog?"... That led to a lot of field research and reading, etc. The first specimen we examined promptly peed in my hand. [It depends on the species, and there are all kinds of variables. :-| ]

I know the feeling, I have had 2 in the last home we lived in. We had a woods in the backyard and I know they can get in the smallest area...but mine were just small grass snakes...the one my cat played with and tired it out so I picked it up with a pitchfork and put it outside. The next snake I covered with a pail because it was moving faster than the last one until my husband came home from work....

If I would of found a large one in the house...it might of been the end of me...a great big heart-attack... I think I pulled the covers back for quite a while before I slithered into bed....

All of God's creatures have a purpose but why do they have to scare some people so much? Snakes are one thing I am definitely scared off...especially when you are on your hands and knees in a flower bed and hear the noise of them moving around. We did have pine snakes too but not in the house.
