Well we had to put up with the howling winds for the 2 days of Sandy and continual rain for the last 5 days now. We survived the winds with only 1 tree toppled over and it took out our telephone line on Monday night. I felt rather at loose ends without the news and internet at my fingertips, I couldn't go outside and there was really not much to do in the greenhouses...cold and dreary being the biggest reason. The neighbor had a field of corn flattened by the winds, another neighbor had 8 trees (mostly not healthy) blown over, another neighbor had a tree blow over onto the next house, a few doors down had there driveway blocked by a toppled spruce, the one across from them had the power knocked out by a falling tree...etc. the whole way down the road. Every tree that came down fell to the south...must have been a huge gust... But I am thankful it wasn't worse.
I'm really pleased to hear that the damage wasn't worse Carolyn. I've been trying to follow Sandy on the news here in the UK. We don't seem to be getting the detailed reports that you will be getting and it's all been a bit worrying. I may not have actually met any of you but it doesn't stop me thinking of you all and hoping you'll come through safe and sound.
KK and Eileen, We had such a minimal amount compared to Manhattan, NJ and New York. Ours was minimal compared to it. I didn't remember to add that we had 5" of rain in the 5 days of rain, too. We are waterlogged.
Carolyn, I'm so glad you are all right, and had no more damage than a downed tree and sogginess. Five days of rain can get rather tiresome, but you came through with flying colors!
carolyn keiper, Glad you survived. Count your blessings. I am. My sister in NJ is having a very hard time as of today. She is using her car gas to go to work, manditory, crazy boss, and can't get her car filled. Boyfriend was getting hotel for the shower and good sleep every few nights and now they are all filled and they cant get into any.Food in freezer is all thrown out now even after they started with 3 bags if ice for help. I cant find 2 friends that live at the nj shore. Dont know if they evacuated.Don't know anything. Just waiting....
Same thing here Barb. Friend and his wife from another group lived minutes from the shore in Jersey and was planning on riding out the storm when I last heard. And no word since. Its unnerving.
And listen to this........hate to gripe. Those of you who know me can tell you, I always look on the good side of things most of the time BUT... Read my last post...now my sister, in nj, has to leave work to get the bosses mail at his post office and go back to work with her car.....I am so angry..he has his family for help, my sister is alone and supporting herself. What a jerk he is..She needs her job security... Little school in town just south of me is letting people get worm there all day today and recharging phones, and taking showers. That is wonderful. Another town just ran out of water in the storage tank. Everyone is having a hard time around here. I am thankful, Barb
Thanks Jane, I am thankful it was not worse than it was. I did walk to the woods today and there were two large trees twisted and down. Of course, not where we can get to them. Ravines and machines are not good combos. Cheryl, we are in great shape compared to the east coast. I am so thankful I don't have the $$$ or misfortune to live there. Barb, I will keep your sister in my prayers. Maybe someday her boss will realize what he was asking of her and make amends. That is just too bad she has to deal with that on top of the stress of everything else right now. Mart and Barb, I hope you hear from your friends soon and that they are well, just evacuated. Thanks Theo. In time it will get better, but in the mean time all have to endure whatever their lot is right now and hopefully make the best of it. We never know what each day will bring, we just have to deal with it.
Barb, emergency responders from Texas are heading to the East Coast. They have trucks filled with bottled water, those nasty Meals Ready to Eat (but if you are hungry, they probably taste pretty good) and sanitary supplies. We called around our church members and filled a pick-up truck bed with requested items. A team of doctors and EMRs are heading out with tetanus vaccine and other needed medicines--it seems that infections from contact with flood waters is pretty prevalent after a disaster. I don't know where the responders will end up, but perhaps in New Jersey or New York. I just wish there was more we could do to alleviate the suffering and uncertainty. Until we find out what more we can do, we'll just sit and pray our heads off!
Carolyn, so glad you are OK. Sad about the trees. It is tough hearing the news of the aftermath of Sandy. She was a wopper of a storm!!! Prayers are being said for everybody affected.
We were really lucky here in central Ohio. Here at the house we only had maybe 30 mph winds. The rain was all light. Only had one small dead limb come down in the wind. But it did finish taking the last of the leaves off the trees.
