When they were pulling up the corn stalks yesterday, evidently, there were a few ears of corn left. Sjoerd mentioned in another post that he would have like to have seen them with the shucks pulled back. So, I grabbed the camera before Hubby shucked them. last corn ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden ) Oh yeah... they are laying on all the chipped up corn stalks. We still haven't decided what to do with all of that yet!
Thanks so much, Cheryl. Those ears look superb. They look to be filled-out perfectly. I see that the kernels on the left one are beginning to dimple--better get that bad boy in the boiling water right away I know what I would do with those corn stalk chips--I'd use them for mulch. Boy, oh boy--what I wouldn't give for a couple of wheel barrow loads of them! I don't have a chipper, so I have to just use the stalks ar they are when I pull them out of the ground. Beautiful cobs, Cheryl--thanks again.
I think mulch is the best use for the shredded stalks too. Should I let them dry out a bit or go ahead and use them while they are moist?
What variety of corn did you plant? You can use the stalk mulch either way. It will dry eventually. I wpuld throw a bit of dirt on it while green and let it compost where you spread it.
Cheryl, You can spread them around and till them right back into your garden for humus. Thats what we do with ours. Or leave them on your garden as a mulch and it will help keep down the weeds.
Beautiful corn. Makes my mouth water. We use an old lawn mower (gas powered) in place of a chipper. It works great on small fruit tree limbs, corn and bamboo stalks and ivy trimmings. Definitely works better than the small chipper we had.
Jewell... that's a good idea about using the push mower since it has a bag attachment. I'll have to keep it in mind. My brother just bought the chipper had has been playing with it every chance he got!
