Today I cleaned and disinfected the nursery box, put the heat pad under it, and put down newspaper and shredded paper. All is ready for the 12 Australorp chicks that will arrive Monday! Nursery box for chicks ( photo / image / picture from marlingardener's Garden ) The cord you see at the left is to a heat pad under the box. The pad covers about 1/2 of the box's bottom, so the chicks can go to a warm spot, or get to a cooler spot when they want. nursery box with lid ( photo / image / picture from marlingardener's Garden ) The lid has been modified to have a 1/4 inch mesh for air circulation, and to keep the little ones in the box. You wouldn't believe how fast chicks learn to jump/fly! I'll be spending the next two weeks or so peering at my little ones, cleaning their box twice a day, and singing lullabies. Then they will move to the playpen in the outside coop and get acquainted with the big girls next door!
Just remember that one of the very first things you MUST do as soon as the babies arrive is to ... take piccies for us!! If you run out of lullabies I'm sure we can come up with some for you. I'm just glad it won't be me singing to them as they'd probably all die of shock.
Eileen, have you ever known a new parent that didn't take loads of pictures of the babies? Believe me, you'll be tired of looking at little black and yellow chicks before I tire of posting pictures! Cheryl, Ideal Poultry will be delivering the chicks, not the stork. I think the stork specializes in babies that have no yellow down, no beaks, and do not develop feathers. At least I hope so . . . .
A lot of anxious stewbies will be waiting for the first pix. We are the ones pacing back and forth in the hallway. Jerry
How fun, Jane. I was at TSC the other day and they had feathered out golden buffs for $1.00 each....I was tempted to go back and get some, but I didn't. maybe I should go back and put them out in the greenhouse......thinking, thinking.....They are fun to watch grow, though.
Their nursery looks very snug. I'm certain the little'uns will love it there. I'm also waiting for photos.
I want chickens to. I can't wait to see your pic's of your little peepers. I would first have to convince my honey to build them a totally enclosed outside run area. But so far no go on the idea. Oh well, I can enjoy looking at your girls.
