Is the, "Limelight" the OLD Hydrangea?, Is this the one you would have found growing in your great-great grandmothers garden? Hydrangea Bush/Tree ( photo / image / picture from Atwood Terrace's Garden )
If Limelight is the cultivar name then no it is not an old Hydrangea. The old fashioned ones are the great-great- grandparents of the modern cultivars but a cultivar isn't likely to be more than about 20 yrs old. Also, do you know the species of the Hydrangea? 'Limelight' is a cultivar of Hydrangea paniculata, there are at least 5 different species of them. Knowing that might help you find out if 'Limelight' is the descendant of one that could be classified as old fashioned.
no, I don't know all the spicies of Hydrangea., Just trying to find the type that may had been around 75 years ago. -What I'm really trying to avoid is the new age, "grafted, improved, new colors", etc., types.,But Thanks toni, I didn't know this.
Do you remember what color the flowers were? The PG has been around for a long time: http://www.heirloomorchardist.com/sears ... bbery.html Snowball Viburnum (also in above link) is often confused with Hydrangea. If blue, that's H. macrophylla. http://msucares.com/pubs/publications/p2574.pdf http://www.vintagegardens.com/hydro_care.html
