Not only is there the musty smell of leaves changing and starting to compost, but I have a pumpkin pie in the oven that is filling the whole house with the smell of fall!
The smell of wet leaves and wood stove smoke ... that is the smell of fall to me. Inside ... pie, baking and food. I love to cook when I can't garden!
I love the smell of fall. A hint of wood smoke, the falling leaves, good things baking in the oven... A good frosty morning. Good things stored up for winter. Yummy.
I use to work on a golf course in Illinois in my younger days and after it rained we would get the smell of the grassland rolling across the open fields. A unique smell, I called the smell 'an Illinois morning'. I have only smelt it one other time in 50 years, I miss that smell. Smells are a different kind of memory but carry with them a stronger feeling. Too bad we couldn't record smells and save them to play back at a later date. That would be something! Jerry
Back when I lived in New Mexico... THE smell of fall was green chiles being roasted. Ohhhh... my mouth is just watering just typing those words. Here in SE Texas... Fall doesn't seem to have a "smell" .... unless you count the ABSENCE of the smell of mosquito spray.
While I am over here in this sweltering heat, cooking nothing but beans (and some chickpeas too)... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUx7omd2mWk - For me, it's the smell of tomato plant leaves. As they really were one of the first things that I ever grew. I honestly believe that even in a catatonic state, if someone were to crush a few fresh tomato plant leaves near my nose - I'd wake up in a flash!
