My Ipomoea batatas 'Blackie' (Ornamental Sweet Potato Vine) had two blooms on it this morning. I didn't even know they bloomed! Actually, I don't know much about this plant at all. Picked up earlier this year from the mark down rack. "Blackie" with flowers ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden ) "blackie" ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden )
What a nice surprise and ow pretty that pink is next to the black leaves. They are used all over the place up here by landscaping companies on retail and business property and I have never seen a bloom on them. But then they are in the same family as the Morning Glory so I guess the flowers have bloomed and gone by mid-morning or so.
I was going to wait until this afternoon to take the photo because of the lighting... but thought to myself "what if they fall off by then?" Hopefully they'll last longer than a few hours... but if not, at least got to see (and photograph) them.
Well, that is just cool! I grow this vine every year,(in pots mixed with other annuals) and have yet to see these pretty flowers! I always end up cutting them way back, cause they go crazy. Love yours!
I haven't seen one of these vines before and love the dark foliage against the delicate, pale flowers. Thank you for posting yours for us Cheryl.
I have never seen it flower before either. Good job on getting to to that point. I grow it and the lime green one every year too and never saw either flower, I amazed.
Oooh! I'd love to have something like that as a contrast to green foliage and strong-coloured blooms. What a lovely plant.
When I worked at the garden center we had several clients tell us their ornamental sweet potato vines actually produced sweet potatos.
Well... the flowers lasted throughout the day (even in this horrible heat). But this morning they had fallen off. But there's a few more blooms waiting to open. ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden ) I really don't know anything about this plant. I liked the color of the leaves when I saw it. And for 50 cents I didn't think I could go wrong with it. :-D It's more of a mounding plant than a vine. I have no clue how large it will grow. I don't even know if I should plant it in the Spring or just keep it in a container. And oh yeah.... you know... I didn't even take the time to see if it had a nice fragrance or not. Shame on me! When I get home, that's going to be the first thing I do. :-D
Droopy, HI I'd be happy to send you a cutting,of the black sweet potato vine(or a lot of them) but not sure if it would make there and how much it would cost. It rambles on and on, I just pulled up 1/2 a garbage bag full. It was taking over some variegated ginger. If it is feasiable to send you some let me know. Donna
