As you folks know we have agreed to participate in a tomato hybrid testing project. We have done a great deal of planning and arranging, making labels, codering and so forth. We have determined what kinds go where, as well as paying attention to what will be tested indoors and which ones will be grown outside. So then, here is a pick of the day the seeds were planted in the root trainers. Four cells of each type. Planting date: 24 mrt 2025. The temp has been carefully monitored throughout. Now, the seedlings have come up in all the cells but two. We are removing the heat and letting them dry out a bit. The toughening-up and hardening-off will begin in some days if not weeks. We shall see how they develop.
I didn't know but I found your thread on it.!! How cool !! So, you will have to be doing extensive record keeping then. I hate they didn't already name the different seeds, just numbered them. It would be great if we knew which of your plants made it commercially after the trials. This is really a huge deal !! You could go down in garden history, ya know !! .
Interesting Sjoerd I've been growing a variety of Tomato called Manx Marvel, not one that's available in the shops. It was bred to grow outside on the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea so it's a stocky, tough little plant
Annie— chuckle…go down in history. Well, I believe that the seeds have no names yet because they are still in the developmental stage. The testing now is to see if they are good enough to continue with their development. The naming will come later if any of these are “special”, shall we say. Zigs— that sounds like a tough customer indeed. Are you chuffed with how it performs? KK— Cheers. I am eager for this.
It's a bit of a bruiser @Sjoerd You can see the seedlings on the left of this photo, compared to the cherry toms and outdoor girl next to them, they're already bigger and they came up later
Tetters pricked them out into a tray today Sjoerd. Would you like me to send you some seeds? I have some spare Bridgwater bean seeds too, that's another heritage variety that you can't get in the shops.
