The redheaded woodpeckers have left our yard. Last Wed. when I left to go exercise I saw one up on the road where it had gotten hit by a car. Then today when I mowed I saw some black and white feathers at the base of the tree where their nest was. I suspect that a young one had either fallen or landed there as it was learning to fly and something got it. I don't have any cats here, but there are some in the area that pass through now and then. But I haven't seen any back here. I haven't seen the woodpeckers the past two days. I usually hear them and you can't miss the way they fly or the bright flash of white. I do hope they come back next year.

What sad news about your woodpeckers. :( I hope that the ones who survived find mates and return to nest again next year.

Well all of them aren't gone after all! I just saw one in the front yard on the ground getting something to eat. Then he flew up into a tree. Hopefully there are more that I haven't seen.
