The Ring of Fire lit up. What an incredible world we live in with way more ways to see what is happening in real time. The red spots are epicenters for quakes. Most were in the 4.1-5.0 range.
Ah, those restless tectonic plates! I'm surprised that Oklahoma doesn't show up on that map--I believe that state has had 179 quakes so far this year. Perhaps the Oklahoma quakes are lesser.
Hmmm... There's no red dots in the U.S. but I know that we've had several 4.0+ and 5.0+ earthquakes here in Idaho over the last 3 weeks.
This information could be up to the minute and those quakes took place a few days or several hours ago so would not be included on that map. One map I found indicates that the area of the northwest US is now not active. Just a guess but after watching all the green splotches on radar images down here during the last few weeks, those might be storms...rain, wind, etc
Toni, you are good at explaining the map. Toni, MG and 2forUs I inserted another map showing lesser earthquakes just for you. I am usually only interested in quakes greater than 5 so had the app set high for quakes. When you live close to active volcanoes you recognize the earths movements as a natural part of life. 23 quake swarms this month so we are more active than normal too. And the mountains are so beautiful. Mt. Rainier takes my breath away on a daily basis. Much better than tornadoes, hurricanes or droughts in my opinion. Takes my breath away in a positive way. The pictured (red circles with squiggles) are quakes greater than 4.5 in the last 7 days only from the previous post. The green, blue, and red marks outside that circles are storm systems. I added a picture of USA and Mexico quakes down to 1+. If I touch the circles in the app it gives the date, time, magnitude, depth, location and several other informational things about the quake. You can zoom in anywhere on the world map to see more details. You can also pick your map style. There are three styles of maps. Topography, topography with roads and map style. Here are some other pictures from the app. Earthquakes are marked green if greater than 1.0, yellow if greater than 2.5 and red if greater than 4.5. Older quakes are faded. Weather is also shown with intensity of storms ranging from green to red blobs. The key doesn't copy. When I touched the dot on Idaho I had info on 26 2.5+ quakes in Soda Springs, Idaho plus others close by. Closeby quakes often overlap until you touch the dot for more information. Then you get a list to choose which quake you want more information. Oklahoma near Fairview had 4 recent quakes plus others around the state. Is Oklahoma still fracking? For me this app is just a way to check on the world.
Thank you for explaining everything, Jewel. I had no idea that there were so many and in so many areas.
Here is a government site that shows the world and you can focus in on specific areas if anyone else is likes this kind of thing. http://ds.iris.edu/seismon/?
Mexico suffered another 6.1 earthquake today that was felt as far north as Mexico City. Rescue efforts have been temporarily suspended until the stability of collapsed buildings can be determined. The stressed citizens are now facing another scare, and are fleeing to the streets. May the countries of the world step up and help with rescue and recovery.
