We drove down to Randy's parents home yesterday and along the highway and country roads there were massive fields of Rudbeckia hirta...it's a Texas native and shows up every year after the Spring wildflowers have died out because of the heat. I was wishing I had a bucket and permission to dig up some but knew that wasn't going to happen. We got down to his folks property and as we pulled into the driveway there was a huge field of them just sitting there waiting for me. And no, I didn't have the presence of mind to take a photo of them all. When we got ready to leave last evening I asked if I could dig some up. FIL asked how many buckets I would need, my MIL grabbed some plastic bags and told me where the shovel was. They were very glad to share them. So I came home with these.... Free for the digging ( photo / image / picture from toni's Garden ) I have a feeling there will be more bags of them waiting for me the next time we go down there since they stay in bloom most of the summer. Plus FIL is going to do some seed harvesting for me as some start going to seed.
Are these black eyed susans? I got 2 clumps for free from a friend too. Mine aren't blooming yet though. I love them.
Black-eyed Susan and Brown-eyed Susan are two of the most common names for them....Free is the best name for them though
I have been looking for something to fill up the H*** strip between the sidewalk and the street curb, these just might be it since that strip only gets water when it rains and is full day sun.
Hi Toni,..great freebies,..they are very striking flowers and seeing they bloom most of the summer that's a bonus.
Toni, my yard is full of them and they are all up and down the road. It's funny because the yard next door where nobody lives has none. I think the sunflower picture I posted has a few of them in it. We've been cutting around them when we cut the grass. dooley
