I have a hummingbird feeder that the birds feed at the base of a jar of food. There is even a small perch for them to set on. But when they drink, they land on the perch drink and then lift their head so they can swallow. But when they lift their head it looks like they are looking at the fluid level to see if it went down any! Also when we get heavy rain, the drops get forced into the feeder holes and dilutes the food. So I hang it under a squirrel baffle and that keeps it from getting wet. And it gives the birds a place to get out of the rain too.
